RECAP: Hebert records third straight shutout in Knights draw against Mountaineers

RECAP: Hebert records third straight shutout in Knights draw against Mountaineers

Tuesday, October 3rd saw the Niagara College (3-3-1, 4th OCAA West) women's soccer program travel to Hamilton to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers (5-1-1, 2nd OCAA West). The Knights entered the game Tuesday night knowing that they were in for a tough contest against the Mountaineers, but strong goalkeeping and solid defense resulted in a tough 0-0 draw.

When asked about his team's performance, Niagara's head coach Rob Lalama was quick to praise his entire team, stating that "it was a complete team effort and I thinks tonight's effort did a lot for the confidence of our players. We were solid defensively, and I believe we created the better chances. We battled with a very good team tonight and showed our quality."

The Knight's goalkeeping was nothing but outstanding as rookie keeper Alexis Hebert's (Waterdown) 23 save performance kept the Mountaineers off the score sheet for the entire 90 minutes. Hebert attributes most of her success to the Knight's goalie coach Gerry D'Angelo. "All of the one on one training I've had with coach Gerry is really helping me to succeed as a keeper and I am feeling more confident in every game we play." The rookie keeper now has now three consecutive shutouts in three OCAA games.

2nd year winger Alex Craig (Oakville) and 1st year striker Michelle Maecker (Waterdown) created many scoring chances, but were unfortunately unable to finish on the night. One major aspect of the match that excited coach Lalama offensively was his winger and striker's "new found chemistry on the pitch." He, and the rest of the Knights hope that this chemistry can help the team win more games in the second half of the season.

Up next the team will host the west division leading Fanshawe Falcons on Wednesday, October 11th at Youngs SportsPlex in Welland. Kickoff for the game is at 4pm.
