Sunday, October 26th saw the Niagara College men's (0-1, 9th West) volleyball program lose to the St. Clair Saints (1-1, 6th West) in straight sets 3-0.
The Knights battled hard in the first set to a 17-18 score before a tough serving run from the Saints closed out the set 25-18.
The second set saw the Knights come out with more energy where they took a 9-3 lead. With the scored tied at 19, the Saints went on 6-2 run to end it.
Falling behind early in the third set, the Knights lost their libero Jeff Scott (Georgetown, ON) to an apparent knee injury and we unable to recover, as they lost 14-25.
3rd year outside hitter Ben Fillmore (Cayuga, ON) played well for the Knights, recording 7 kills on 14 swings.
Head coach Nathan Groenveld knows the team will need to improve their serve game to be competitive in the OCAA West. "This loss is a direct reflection of our pass and serve game," said coach Groenveld. "We were unable to take St. Clair out of system and therefore we battled out of system all afternoon. This was a great lesson in how tough the West is going to be this year."
The Knights have a short week now as they get ready for their home opener on Friday, October 31st against the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-0, 2nd West). Game time is set for 8:00pm at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.
