RECAP: Scott honoured, Knights get back in the win column over Condors

On a night where Jeff Scott was honoured for becoming the Niagara Knights men's volleyball program's (2-3, 6th OCAA West), it was Jeff Scott who carried the torch for Niagara. The Knights defeated the visiting Conestoga Condors (1-4, 8th OCAA West) in a five set affair at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre on Thursday night.

Scott had a blistering career-high 26 kills in leading the Knights to an emotional five set victory. His attack was bolstered by the setting ability of Garrett Suderman (Niverville, MB). Suderman distributed 49 assists to go along with 11 digs and three blocks as the third year played his most well rounded game of the season.

Marcus Francis (Pickering) was the other offensive dynamo for Niagara, chipping in 16 kills and two blocks. Tyler Vanderwal (St. Catharines) was timely down the stretch for the Knights chipping in four kills on five attempts, and two massive blocks, in the late stages of the match.

It was an up and down affair for the Knights, who won the first set convincingly 25-20 over the Condors. However, Conestoga would respond and carry the play for each of the next two sets, winning 25-21 and 25-22 respectively. From there, the Knights responded brilliantly.

Niagara forced a fifth and deciding set with a dominating 25-16 performance in the fourth set. They followed up on the momentum with a 15-9 performance in the final set to leave with the victory.

"Tonight was a battle for us," said Head Coach Nathan Groenveld. "Conestoga is very well coached, and made uncomfortable all night. We were able to hit for a good efficiency and that was the different in the match tonight."
