WELLAND, ONT: The Niagara College women's volleyball team (5-2) welcomed the #1 Humber Hawks (6-0) to the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at the Welland Campus Saturday evening. Celebrating Niagara College's ReuKnighted alumni event, the Knights weren't able to find much luck as they lost in straight sets (set scores were 16-25, 20-25 and 20-25).
A game that saw Humber score the first 5 points of the set did not get any easier for Niagara as the night went on. The first set continued as the Knights were unable to slow the Hawks down, ultimately losing by 9 points. The second set saw the Knights come out firing as they took an early 3 point lead, only to see Humber fight back to take the 2nd set – putting the Knights on the brink of a 2nd straight loss on the season. The third set had fans watching both teams trade points as the Knights were trying everything to keep this game going. In the end, the Hawks proved too strong on this night and handed the Knights a 3-set loss. Sam Cormier and Abbey Gooder led the way offensively for the Knights, each contributing 8 points. Megan Patterson, who added 7 digs in this game, kept Niagara alive throughout the match making dig after dig and allowing the Knights the opportunity to capitalize on some attacking chances.
Steve Stone, head coach for the Knights, was a man of few words tonight, solely stating that "we were hopeful for a different outcome, but we weren't able to execute." When asked to elaborate, Stone simply said "we need to find another level of energy in these contests to put ourselves in a better position to compete."
The Knights get the week to rest and game plan as they get set to head up the highway to battle the Redeemer Royals (3-2) in Ancaster on Friday, November 21st at 6pm. If you aren't able to make the drive to catch your Knights in action, be sure to tune into OCAA Live so you don't miss a thing.
