WELLAND, ON: The Niagara College men's volleyball team (1-0) took on the visiting Redeemer Royals (0-1) Saturday afternoon at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at the Welland Campus. The match saw the Knights defeat the Royals 3-1 (set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-23).
The Knights had contributions from the entire roster throughout the afternoon, seeing both rookies and veterans making an impact for the win. 2nd year setter, Matthew Perron noticed a blown-up picture of his face in the crowd as he put up 29 assists, 3 service aces and 3 digs to help drive the Knights to their first victory of the season. Rookie Wizdom Smith, hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, made sure the OCAA knew he had arrived as he contributed 16 points and 3 digs while fellow rookie Rowan Redekop controlled the middle on both sides of the ball, tallying 9 points and 4 blocks.
Head coach of the Knights, Steve Stone, acknowledged that it's "always nice to start the season off with a win in our own barn." He continued to add that he "thought the boys came out just a little slow at the start but they cleaned it up and took a good win to start the season against a top-notch opponent in Redeemer."
The Knights will travel up the QEW to take on the Conestoga Condors (0-1) Wednesday evening at 8pm, as they hope to start the season 2-0.
