Knights suffer loss on ‘Senior Night’

WELLAND, ON: The Niagara Knights men's volleyball team (8-7) partook in the 2nd of 3
straight home games Wednesday evening against the Conestoga Condors (11-5). The
Knights unfortunately lost 3-1 to the Condors with set scores of 11-25, 25-18, 23-25 and
23-25.
The evening started off with seniors Ashton Nieuwets, Liam Marchetti, Matthew Takacs,
Adrien Feuillat and Micah Nieuwets being honoured for their time in a Knights uniform,
as they get set to graduate at the end of this season. A. Nieuwets played 4 seasons
with the Knights and is a graduate of the Protection, Security and Investigation –
Customs Border Services, the General Arts & Science (College Exploration) program
and is completing his Horticultural Technician (Co-op) diploma. Marchetti, the 2nd year
Knight, is set to graduate from the Electrical Engineering Technician program. Takacs,
the reigning Niagara College Male Rookie of the Year concludes his 2nd year with the
Knights, completing his certificate in the Pre-Health Sciences program. Feuillat will be
graduating from the Recreation Therapy program and even though hasn't seen any
official court time after sustaining an injury, he has been an integral part of the team
since he arrived at Niagara College. Lastly, M. Nieuwets, completes 4 years as a Knight
and is set to graduate from the Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film (Radio and
TV Presentation) program.
This match saw the Condors putting the Knights back onto their heels right off the hop,
as the Knights took an unfortunate 14-point loss in the 1 st set. Coming out of the
huddle, the Knights were determined to fight back and show that they were not going to
be walked over. Strong battles and tough rallies ended up with the Knights coming out
of the 2 nd set with a 7-point win. The next 2 sets were clashes from the first point and all
the way through, which ultimately culminated with a 3-1 Knights loss. Wizdom Smith
and Ashton Nieuwets, the go-to attackers for the Knights, once again led the team
combining for 23 points on 18 kills, 10 digs, 4 blocks, 1 service ace and 1 assist.
Middles, Rowan Redekop and RJ Martin, also combined for 17 points on 9 kills, 8
blocks, 5 digs and 1 assist.
"This loss was a tough one to swallow," said Steve Stone, head coach of the Knights.
Stone continued to say, "it was a win that we needed - the boys played hard and gave a
full effort, but we just couldn't get the job done."
The Knights take to the court Saturday afternoon, in their last home game of the
season, against the St. Clair Saints (5-10) at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at the

Welland Campus - the game is scheduled to start at 3:00pm. Come on out and cheer
