HAMILTON, ON: The Niagara Knights women's basketball team took a road loss on Saturday, losing 95-52 to the defending OCAA champion Mohawk Mountaineers.
The Knights found themselves with a smaller roster than normal for today's game, and although they scored the first basket, the Mountaineers pulled away in the 2nd quarter and never looked back.
Niagara scored 17 points to Mohawk's 24 in the 1st quarter, keeping the game close for the time being. The 2nd quarter was a different story where the Mountaineers shut down the Knights' offence and held them to a mere 12 points. The 3rd and 4th quarters were similar stories, where the Knights found themselves being outplayed and just could not keep up with this talented Mohawk team.
The Knights can brag a perfect game from the free throw line tonight, going 11 for 11, but shooting only 32.1% from the floor was just not good enough. Another strong takeaway from tonight for the Knights is the solid game that 2nd year Lyric Shallow put together, tallying 21 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. 2nd year guard Alyah Pereira also had a strong game in her first game of the season, adding 6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 block.
Niagara now has a quick turnaround as they prepare for what promises to be another tough game against a strong opponent in the Humber Hawks. The Knights will travel to the Humber Athletic Centre in Toronto on Wednesday, October 29th with tipoff scheduled for 6pm.
