BRAMPTON, ON: The Niagara Knights women's basketball team (0-4) lost a heartbreaker in the final seconds on Friday evening, falling 67-60 to the Sheridan Bruins.
The Knights started off strong, outscoring the Bruins by 1 point in the 1st quarter after trading baskets back and forth for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the game. The 2nd quarter continued to be a balanced game with both teams trading buckets back and forth until the Bruins pulled away late in the 2nd quarter to take a small 2-point advantage into the halftime break.
The Bruins scored the first two baskets coming out of the halftime break, building the lead to 7 points, before the Knights tried to mount their comeback. A strong run by 1st year Keira Teske that was started with a solid defensive rebound, led to a 5-2 run by the Knights before the Bruins yet again shut down the Knights's offense and went on a 6-0 run of their own. Strong free-throw shooting was this highlight of this quarter for the Knights as they went 9-for-10 from the line. Unfortunately, this was still not enough, as they found themselves to be down by 6 as the 3rd quarter wrapped up.
The Bruins yet again scored the first 2 baskets of the quarter and continued to grow their lead as they led by 11 with 3 minutes remaining in this game. The Knights were not ready to concede this one, and fought hard to bring the scoring closer together, closing the lead to only 5 points with just over 1 minute remaining. Unfortunately, that was the best they could do as they could not complete the comeback and ended up losing by 7 on a last-minute free throw by Sheridan.
Alyah Pereira, the 2nd year guard out of Hamilton, ON, had the best game of her career to date, scoring 20 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block. Supplementing a strong defensive game, 1st year guard Emma Vendittelli added 6 points, 11 rebounds (10 of them defensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Also a 1st year guard, and also starting for the Knights this year, Keira Teske added 8 points and 3 rebounds to the scoresheet. Emma and Keira are both local recruits out of Niagara Falls and St. Catharines, respectively.
Niagara will have the week to recover and regroup before they host a weekend double header this coming Friday and Saturday. They will host the Lambton Lions at 6pm on Friday, November 7th and the St. Clair Saints at 1pm on Saturday, November 8th. Both games will be held at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre in Welland.
