WELLAND, ON: The Niagara Knights women's basketball team (2-5) secured their second win of the season and started ReuKnighted 2025 off on the right foot! They took down the Redeemer Royals (1-5) with a 77-65 win at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre in Welland.
The Knights were hungry to get back into the win column, as they carefully outscored the Royals 26-20 in the 1st quarter. The Royals kept the pressure on, but the Knights remained determined as they headed into halftime with a 43-31 lead. The Knights never looked back as they scored 21 points in the 3rd quarter and 13 in the 4th to eventually close out the game.
The Knights were led by 2nd-year guard Lyric Shallow; her scoring abilities proved to be too strong for the Royals as she went 9-for-15 and scored 23 of the Knights' 43 points in the first half. The guard didn't need to score very much during the 2nd half as Shallow only put up 2 more shots and finished with 24 points - the most she has scored all season. "It's my Nana's birthday" Shallow provides after the game, hinting that she played well for her Nana.
The Knights struggled a bit during the 2nd half as they turned the ball over 8 times in the 4th quarter. However, their defensive mindset helped them finish strong as they forced the Royals to turn the ball over 21 times, which led to a difference of 22 points scored off turnovers. The Royals won the 4th quarter, scoring 20 points to the Knights' 13, but it wasn't enough as the Knights were able to hang on and secure the win.
Other key players today include 5th-year guard Aisja Strachan who recorded 12 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists and 4 steals. 1st-year guard Emma Vendittelli also had a strong game, putting up her 1st double-double of the season with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
"Everyone stepped up today, especially Lyric and Aisja. We need to work on taking care of the ball a bit better" Niagara College women's basketball head coach Allie Columbus said after the game. "This was a full team effort, there's still things to improve on, but we earned this win".
The Knights will have some time to rest and recover before they head to London for their next game on Wednesday, November 26th. They will take on the Fanshawe Falcons at the Glenn Johnson Athletic Centre with tipoff scheduled for 6pm.
